Diabetes Blog Week Day 4: Changes.

Today let’s talk about changes, in one of two ways.  Either tell us what you’d most like to see change about diabetes, in any way.  This can be management tools, devices, medications, people’s perceptions, your own feelings – anything at all that you feel could use changing.  OR reflect back on some changes you or your loved one has seen or been through since being diagnosed with diabetes.  Were they expected or did they surprise you?

Diabetes Blog Week Day 1: I Can.

Today is the start of Diabetes Blog Week, hosted by the amazing Karen at Bitter-Sweet.  Each day I will attempt to blog about the topic put forth to diabetics across the world.

In the UK, there was a diabetes blog theme of “I can…”  that participants found wonderfully empowering.  So let’s kick things off this year by looking at the positive side of our lives with diabetes.  What have you or your loved one accomplished, despite having diabetes that you weren’t sure you could?  Or what have you done that you’ve been particularly proud of?  Or what good thing has diabetes brought into your life?  (Thank you to the anonymous person who submitted this topic suggestion.)


There are so many activities out there that people are afraid to do.  Run a marathon, sky dive, scuba dive, have a child.

As a diabetic, sometimes things that already scare us make us even more nervous.  How will my sugars react to: prolonged exercise, adrenaline, altitude, pressure, raging hormones?  Will I go low and not be able to treat myself?  Will I go so high I pee mid-flight?

I am proud of many accomplishments in my life but there is one that truly sticks out above all others.

My greatest accomplishment as a diabetic was being a part of the Blue Knights Drum and Bugle Corps.  If you don’t know what Drum Corps is here are a few videos and articles on what it means to be a musician that is also an athlete.

I would train at least 14 hours a day from May through August .  I would run, dance, perform on a football field over and over and over again wearing nothing but pretty much a swimsuit.  I would be in all sorts of climates from a hot desert in Modesto, California to the swamp lands of Louisiana, to the raging heat of Texas… all in the middle of summer.  I slept on a tour bus or on a hard gym floor.  I ate whatever food was prepared for me with no idea of a carb count.  Lots of sugary Kool-Aid type drinks, Hamburger Helper, cereal.  All while having T1D.   And this was before CGMs or before I wore a pump.  (Not really an option back in 2000 with the tubing and what I was doing) Plus the added stress of not wanting to let down the other members or my instructors and have them think I was weak or not able to keep up.  But I did.  For three years I trained like a finely tuned athlete in her peak for hours a day.  I kept everything stable and together.  Sure I had some bad highs and lows but nothing that stopped me from what I loved to do.

So that’s that.  I personally think all diabetics can do anything they want.  It might take some time, some training, some help, but you can do it.  If I can, you can!

DBlogWeek: My Favorite Things

Today’s Yesterday’s Diabetes Blog Week prompt: As we wrap up another Diabetes Blog Week, let’s share a few of our favorite things from the week. This can be anything from a #DBlogWeek post you loved, a fantastic new-to-you blog you found, a picture someone included in a post that spoke to you, or comment left on your blog that made you smile. Anything you liked is worth sharing!

This was my first Diabetes Blog Week and I think it was fairly successful.  There was only one day I didn’t post and that’s because I ended up working for 16 straight hours and driving across the state while everyone else in the car slept.  I started a post but haven’t had time to finish it.  I will though because I feel Wednesday’s topic was an important one, “What Brings Me Down”.

So let’s see.  What are a few of my favorite things? (Not the Sound of Music, that’s for sure)


First of all, how inspiring was it to see dozens and dozens of bloggers participate in Diabetes Blog Week!?  All diabetics (Type 1, 2, 3, lada, gestational…) coming together and talking and sharing about our community.  On multiple occasions I would go over to the list of participants and randomly click on a link to see what they had to offer.  I read dozens of posts from familiar and new “faces” and enjoyed each one.  Thank you to everyone who joined this year!

I came across a beautiful work of art was seen over at Test Guess and Go.  I would love to get this picture in High Res and print it out.  I am currently collecting my empty insulin bottles and I hope to create something as beautiful as Laddie has.

I read a post about “What Brings Me Down” over at Death of a Pancreas.  I can’t imagine what it would be like to have a child with t1d.  I know I was one once, but I wasn’t all that young when I was diagnosed.  At age 12 I could handle myself pretty well.  Joanne writes an emotional blog about a rough week with her daughter’s diabetes.  From sticky highs to stubborn lows and everything in between.  And then the horrid words I think almost every diabetic has yelled at a parent, sibling, friend, spouse, partner, loved one…“But you DON’T know.  You’ll NEVER know.  You’re not the one with diabetes, I AM!”  I can’t imagine being that parent, sibling, friend, spouse, partner, loved one.  So thank you from all diabetics to all those who love us, diabetes and all.  We appreciate you no matter what we say, even in times where we feel so utterly alone. 

I have come to find that there are A LOT of diabetics named Scott and Kelly. Well maybe not a lot but their names kept popping us this week!

DBlogWeek: Diabetes Life Hacks

Today’s prompt: Share the (non-medical) tips and tricks that help you in the day-to-day management of diabetes.  Tell us everything from clothing modifications, serving size/carb counting tricks to the tried and true Dexcom-in-a-glass trick or the “secret” to turning on a Medtronic pump’s backlight when not on the home-screen (scroll to the bottom of this post). Please remember to give non-medical advice only!

Hmmm… Most of my diabetes hacks have been blogged about before.  Here are some that pop into my mind that might have not been “hacked out” yet or are just a few things I do to keep my diabetes “in line”.

I am always trying to find new and creative ways to wear my pump when in a dress.  I think I will have to test out wrapping an Ace bandage around my pump and thigh to see if that will work.  Because clearly the pump garter I have does not work.  But I do want to try this homemade garter out.

Keeping an old infusion set in when inserting a new one.  In case the new one “doesn’t take” aka kinks or turns vampire, you can always hook yourself back up to your old one.  This is especially helpful when you are at work or on the go and don’t have the tools or time to switch the site again.  And once you do know your site is good to go, take the old one out.

Thankfully my Animas Ping has a protective lens cover on it.  Lord knows how many corners, doors, people I bang my pump into.  (My old Medtronic looked like it had gone through a war zone by the end of its life.)  And that got me thinking about my Dexcom.  I try to keep my receiver in a cute little case that is another hack, but sometimes I just throw it in a pocket or purse and forget about it.  With that being said, I decided to order a few extra covers and use one on my Dexcom.  They are exactly the same size and now I don’t worry (as much) about scratching the crap out of my beautiful screen.

And I hate glucose tabs.  I will do just about anything not to eat one.  So I keep a box of CapriSuns in the trunk of my car so that way I don’t have to touch the stash of glucose tabs I keep in the glove compartment and purse.

DBlogWeek: Mantras And More

Today’s prompt: Yesterday we opened up about how diabetes can bring us down. Today let’s share what gets us through a hard day. Or more specifically, a hard diabetes day. Is there something positive you tell yourself? Are there mantras that you fall back on to get you through? Is there something specific you do when your mood needs a boost? Maybe we’ve done that and we can help others do it too?

So this post isn’t about a single hard day necessarily… more about every day.

It is just a single drop… in a vast ocean (of blood sugar checks)

There are many times (almost every time) when I judge myself over the number that pops up on my meter.  117?  Perfection.  359?  I shouldn’t have had that extra roll.  43?  But I was trying to be healthy and exercise.  So many thoughts go through my head as soon as I place that drop of blood on a test strip.  Will I be high?  Will I be in range?  What if a sneaky low crept in and I didn’t feel it.

I have to tell myself… this is just a single drop of blood.  Just one drop of blood, just one test in the hundreds of thousands that I will do in a lifetime.  So I should not judge myself so quickly.  We all make mistakes, we all can’t be perfect, and when we are, be happy and think that “You Can Do This”.  😉

A small diabetic pleasure

Little orange cap popping off

Glimmer of happiness


In case you don’t understand that terrible haiku, one of my favorite things about diabetes (believe me there aren’t many) is when I open a new bottle of insulin.  There is just something so satisfying about popping the little orange (or purple or maroon) cap off an insulin bottle.  I don’t know why but I cherish it.  I savor it.  I tell my t1d friends and they jump on the bandwagon and join me in treasuring that half a second.  That sweet, tiny diabetic piece of happiness.
